Movement matters.
At Theralleve, we advocate for our clients to ‘get moving’ after our treatments. We purposely provide simple “home-care” to not only improve daily routines around things like posture and breath-work, but also provide exercises that can help with muscle strength, engagement, and stability. We trust that movement not only extends the life of the treatments we give but more importantly, helps the brain and body connect better, especially when you are rehabilitating from being in pain.
Perhaps surprisingly, walking is one of our favourite recommendations for home-care. For those who are physically able, walking is a powerful tool for several reasons:
1. Good for heart health – when you are moving your body on a walk, your heart rate increases and this both improves circulation and helps lower blood pressure.
2. Muscle strength and endurance – during a walk, several muscles are used and each contraction and relaxation of muscle helps your muscle fibers build strength and endurance.
3. Supports joint health– walking creates an increase in synovial fluid which, like grease on a squeaky brake, helps lubricate and strengthen the joints. This can lead to better joint functionality and a reduction in pain and stiffness.
4. Increases lung capacity – regular walking can improve the strength and efficiency of the respiratory muscles, enhancing lung capacity and function.
5. Create space for better mental health – walking can help you clear your mind, become “grounded”, take those necessary breaths that sometimes feel compromised when we are stressed.
6. Walking and RAPID – your muscles act like a pump, helping to move blood and lymphatic fluid through your body. Stimulating this kind of circulation is crucial for immune function and waste removal. Within a RAPID treatment, we tend to “stir” things up so movement is always highly encouraged, especially to process leftover pain.
In conclusion, whether it is walking or another form of specialized activitiy, moving your body may support tissue healing, reduce pain, and restore function more quickly by keeping the body’s systems active and engaged. At Theralleve, we want you to feel your best, but we also want you to function better so don’t be shocked when we tell you to move it, move it.
